In this post, I’ll share some of the best Caribbean islands to visit with kids.
Destinations that make for truly unforgettable family beach vacations, and what makes these specific islands so family-friendly.
The Caribbean is one of our favorite and easiest regions to visit with kids, especially when we’re looking for a trip close to the U.S. Our children have now traveled with us to 11 different Caribbean islands, and each one is unique—with its own flora, fauna, cuisine, and culture!
With easy, often affordable flights from the U.S., multiple islands to choose from, and a variety of ways to explore (cruises, fly-and-stay, ferry-hopping, or even chartering a sailboat), the possibilities are endless.
What Makes a Caribbean Island Family-Friendly?
You might be wondering—what exactly makes a Caribbean island great for families with young kids? Let me explain.
Easy-to-Reach Caribbean Islands from the U.S.
Many Caribbean islands are extremely easy to access, with short travel times and often direct flights from major U.S. airports making these the best islands for families. This is especially beneficial for families with young children, toddlers, or babies. We’ve taken our kids to all the islands listed below and had a wonderful experience at each one.
Swimmable, Calm Beaches
The Caribbean is famous for its calm, swimmable beaches. When planning your trip, it’s worth understanding the difference between the windward (exposed, often wavier) and leeward (sheltered, calmer) sides of an island. The leeward side typically offers bays and coves that are perfect for young swimmers and relaxed family beach days. These areas make for the best Caribbean beaches for families.
That said, if you’re planning to kiteboard or kitesurf, the windward side might be what you’re looking for.
Kid Amenities: Pools, Playgrounds, and Babysitting Services
When choosing where to stay, amenities like pools, playgrounds, and available babysitting services make a big difference. Kid-friendly lodging options include villas, hotels, and resorts. Bonus points if the resort has splash pads or slides!
On a recent trip to Martinique, one of the beaches even had soccer goals—my oldest joined a group of local schoolchildren for a spontaneous game of pickup soccer. Even though there was a language barrier (my son doesn’t know much French), a great time was had by all.
Some accommodations offer on-site babysitting or nanny services. One of our most relaxing trips was to a resort in Jamaica when our two oldest kids were both under age 2 (more on this below). The resort provided a nanny every day—it was such a blessing! You can also consider bringing a babysitter with you (a sibling, grandparent, etc.) to help with supervision and give you a chance to enjoy adult-only time, massages, or a date night.

Car Seats for Caribbean Travel
Car seats can be tricky when traveling. We’ve done everything—from lugging our own through the airport to renting with our rental car company. Our new favorite solution? Ride Safer car seat safety vests. They’re compact, fit kids ages 3+, and are so much easier than carrying four bulky seats. For infants, I still recommend bringing your own car seat—but opt for a more affordable one, so your everyday seat doesn’t get damaged in transit.
Travel-Friendly Baby Carriers
Baby carriers are my go-to when traveling with infants or toddlers. They keep my hands free, give my baby a cozy place to nap, and even offer a bit of a workout. I use mine in airports, on flights, while walking through towns, and even hiking waterfalls.

🇻🇮 St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands)
A No-Passport-Required Family Beach Destination makes St. Thomas a fabulous option for the best Caribbean beaches for kids.
St. Thomas is a fantastic family-friendly island—especially since U.S. citizens don’t need a passport. It offers beautiful beaches, friendly locals, and a laid-back vibe.
Don’t miss Magens Bay, where calm waters and seagrass attract sea turtles—perfect for snorkeling with kids. If you’re visiting by cruise, it’s an easy open-air taxi ride from the port.

🇲🇶 Martinique
Volcanoes, Waterfalls & Culture on a French Caribbean Island make it one of the best Caribbean islands to visit with kids.
Martinique is one of the most adventure-packed islands we’ve visited. From mountain trails and hanging bridges to hidden waterfalls and petrified forests, it’s an unforgettable playground for kids.
We rented a van and stayed in a villa close to the beach, giving us the flexibility to explore. For longer trips, you could split your time between the north and south sides of the island.

🇸🇽 St. Maarten / St. Martin
Two distinct cultures in one island adventure make St. Martin/St. Maarten a unique Caribbean island destination to visit with kids.
St. Maarten gives you two countries in one—Dutch and French sides, each with its own charm and food scene. We’ve visited twice: once on a cruise, and once as our sailing trip base.
The calm waters, unique colored sandy beaches, kid-friendly dining, and vibrant culture make it a hit with families. Relax at a beachside resort (like the lovely, beachside Oyster Bay Beach Resort), charter a Catamaran, or visit this wonderful island on a cruise!
🇧🇱 St. Barthélemy (St. Barth)
A hidden gem worth the extra effort makes St. Barth one of the best Caribbean islands to visit with kids.
St. Barts isn’t packed with families, but don’t let that deter you. We homeschool, so we often travel off-season and avoid the crowds. While we mostly saw couples here, the island is still very family-friendly, with chic cafés, safe beaches, and charming bakeries.
Take a short flight or ferry from St. Maarten to reach Gustavia. Don’t miss Shell Beach, a beach made entirely of crushed seashells—our kids loved it!
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico
A passport-free caribbean escape with culture and nature keeps Puerto Rico as one of the best islands for families.
Puerto Rico is a fantastic option if you’re traveling without passports from the U.S. You’ll find beaches, waterfalls, and cultural heritage—without the hassle of international travel.
Explore Old San Juan, relax on family beaches, or hike through El Yunque Rainforest to an unexpected waterfall. Accommodations on this island are quite affordable!
🇯🇲 Jamaica
Amazing all-inclusive resorts for families makes Jamaica a great Caribbean island to visit with kids.
Jamaican culture and cuisine are worth the trip alone! With tons of resorts and activities like floating down Dunn’s River Falls, snorkeling, or deep-sea fishing, you’ll never run out of fun for kids of all ages.
Years ago, we stayed at Franklyn D. Resort & Spa, which includes roundtrip airport transport and a daily nanny. It was perfect when we had two kids under age 2! I highly recommend it if you have young children and are looking for a little R&R on you family vacation.
